WhatsApp is introducing a new AI-powered tool called Writing Help to assist users in crafting their messages. This feature, designed to help you perfect the tone of your text, allows you to rephrase messages in various styles, such as professional, funny, or supportive.
How it Works and Key Features
To use Writing Help, simply begin typing a message in a one-on-one or group chat. A pencil icon will appear, and tapping it will display a pop-up with alternative versions of your message. You can select one of these suggestions to replace your text, and then either send it directly or edit it further. The goal is to make communication smoother and more expressive by helping you find the right words.
A core component of this feature is user privacy. WhatsApp states that Writing Help is built on Meta’s Private Processing technology, which ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can read your original message or the AI-generated suggestions. This technology has reportedly been validated by independent security researchers and has passed privacy audits.
Availability and User Control
This feature is completely optional and is disabled by default, giving users full control over whether to use it. To enable it, you’ll need to turn it on in your settings.
Initially, Writing Help is rolling out in English for users in the United States and a few other selected countries. Meta plans to expand its availability to more regions and languages later in the year.
By integrating this tool directly into the app, WhatsApp hopes to offer a convenient and secure alternative to third-party AI writing tools.
